Fuse crashes on startup

i have tried the install process a few times and when i try to load fuse it gets as far as a bouncing icon before it disappears… any thoughts?

Just to check: the Fuse tray icon does not appear? It should look like this on OSX and Windows respectively (the leftmost icon in the toolbars in these pictures):

Do you get any additional info if you try to start it from a terminal / command line? (Just open a terminal and type fuse)
